Water supply and sanitation in Africa

The people who live in Africa have not had abundant availability of water. In the past few years the availability has gone up some for those who live in urban areas, but in the rural areas most still are with little access to clean water. It was hopeful that by now every house hold would have access to clean water but that has not been the case. Over 20 years access to clean water has only increased eight percent in the rural areas. In 2010 11 million people did not have access to clean or sanitized water. However the availability has been increasing, very slowly though, over the years.

Picture:
This picture shows improvement of water availability in Africa. Its holding hope for the people in rural areas that eventually they will get clean water.

Opinion:
In my opinion I believe that the water supply will start to increase now because of the awareness that it is a problem. I believe it will definitely take sometime to get where it needs to be but with all the help that other countries are providing eventually it will get there.

Questions:
1. Do you believe the availability of clean water will increase or decrease over the years?
2. What are somethings we can do to help increase availability if any?
3. What could be some possible causes of the availability of water not being at where it should be?

This video shows how bad the water is in Africa, how limited they are on water and how most of it is polluted and contaminated. It is really sad that this is happening to them and that all the little kids that have to suffer through it. The video makes you appreciate all that we have. How fortunate we are to have all this clean water to shower in, water plants, use toilets and use it to wash clothes and dishes, but yet in Africa they don’t even have clean water to drink. Watch the video and think how lucky you are.

  2. My opinion is that it will take a long time, but it wil eventually happen. Many countries have a lot of resources and power to help the people of Africa. Now with the added awareness the issue is getting it will probably speed up the process. I also believe that as a country we should try to help as much as we can. The unsanitized water is making many people sick, possibly killing them. As American citizens we should use the resources we have to help them.
    1) What could happen if the water continues to be contaminated?

  3. 1.) I believe the availability of clean water will decrease over the years. I think this because the population is drastically increasing and that will reduce our resources (water). The need for water will increase and tribes in Africa might not be fighting over land anymore. Water will be their highest demand.
2.) Some things we can do to increase the availability of water is, provide the Africans with water treatment plants, and that will make the water usable for them. We could also dig wells to harvest the clean ground water for them. That could give them much more usable water.
3.) Some reasons why they don't have enough water is the climate, corrupt leaders, and the location. The heat in Africa is extreme and causes heavy evaporation of the water. Also rain-fall is scarce and happens infrequently. The corrupt leaders in Africa take most of the water for themselves and give very little out to the civilians. That gives the tribal men reasons to join the corrupt people. It does because they need to supply their family with clean water and the only way to do that is to work for the bad men. My last reason is the location of the country. The country could be in a desert region and not much rain falls in the desert. Also unclean water is the main issue. Most of the water they have is unclean and causes disease. They do not have the equipment to treat the water.
